WRECK-IT-RALPH Trailer!!

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

I am beyond EXCITED for this movie. When I visited Disney Animation with Laura and Keiko a few months ago, I saw pre-production work galore (as well as a small arcade & actual Wreck-It-Ralph arcade game), so it's really great seeing a trailer now. EEEEEE!!! It's about an 8-bit video game villain who tries to be a good guy. Disney was able to get the rights to a bunch of games so you'll see some familiar faces from Super Mario Bros. Street Fighter and Pac-Man. Yeeeeeee!

How I ate my way through New York City

Monday, June 04, 2012

Kevin and I had fun devouring our way through NYC and BK. A few other places google maps was unable to find: Tradesman Bar in Bushwick, Clementine Bakery in Clinton Hill, and Speedy Romeo in Clinton Hill. YUM.

Trip highlights:
Momofuku Ko - Kevin woke up at 6:30am to try his luck at getting a reservation for Momofuku Ko. They only release reservations 7 days in advance and at 10am EST, hence the early wake up. After several refreshes we had SUCCESS!! No photography allowed but I will share my favorite dish: shaved Hudson Valley foie gras, lychee, pineapple gelee and pine nut brittle. The melon, cold dashi, oyster shooter was divine as well. So was the turnips, avocado-coconut milk puree, scallops and cucumber ice dish, and well, the 10 other dishes.

Maialino - My sister's boyfriend works here as a barista so we got special treatment. The chef offered to cook a mystery meal of 3 courses plus desssert for $50 a head. We had strong cocktails and an endless amount of food, including the lamb neck stew, olive oil cake, THE BREAD, seared octopus, veal heart, lamb chops, and my favorite... fresh, hot doughnuts with warm cider syrup. Gah. It's an experience, and there have been several celebrity sightings there including more recently, Jack White (Bina's bf FREAKED OUT). Tied with Momofuku for best meal.

Uniqlo & Muji - DUH! Shopping spreeeeeeeeee

Bemelmans Bar - Kevin and I learned about it from Anthony Bourdain's The Layover. The drinks are pricey yet stiff. But you're not paying for the drinks--you're paying for atmosphere, and it's pure magic. The walls are covered from carpet to ceiling with Ludwig Bemelmans's murals. Even the lamp shades are painted! I would love to just sit and read a book in there.

Doctor Who's Fort

Friday, June 01, 2012

While my sister was in town, she made sure to get me hooked on Doctor Who. Being a fan of the X-Files, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica (whoa scifi nerd?!?), how did I go so long without watching Doctor Who?!?! Inspired by my binge-watching of the Doctor's adventures-specifically David Tennent's 10th Doctor-I painted what I imagined to be a kid's interpretation. Look closely you'll find a a blanket fort universe, a Dalek constructed out of cardboard boxes, a strainer, and a plunger, and the Doctor's screwdriver as your average household flashlight. The original's been spoken for but I do have limited edition prints in the shop. Enjoy the nerdy homage!

BTW, I do plan on making more fort interpretations of other childhood and cult favorites. Next on the list... Mario & Luigi!

Jill Aiko Yee + Cloud Cloud at Hester Street Fair

A couple days ago, I visited my friends Jill & Claudia in their Los Angeles studio to pick up my reserved Co-Lab Watercolor Scarf. I had only seen it briefly months ago but it's even better than I remember it--delightfully soft,
light, perfect for the summer, and by my two good friends, fashion designer Jill of Jill Aiko Yee and
graphic designer guru Amy Kim.
I want this dress...

Her studio partner, Claudia of Cloud Cloud, makes the most wonderful leather goods & pillows. I bought two lavender-scented pillows for myself & for Kevin's parents as a thank you for the wine tasting weekend.

Typically you can only find their goods online or if you make an appointment, but LUCKY YOU! You can meet them and buy their handmade goods at Los Angeles's Hester Street Fair. (Yup, the NYC-based craft, food and fashion outdoor market is now in Los Angeles.)

WonderGround Gallery draws inspiration from Disney's deeply rooted art and storytelling-driven heritage - especially the idea of stepping through the looking glass, which the greatest of art allows us to do.
